Flying with 1 y/o and Graco car seat?
We will obviously need a car seat when we get to where we're going, and I know you can bring one on the plane, which I'd like to do because it looks like there will be empty seats for us to use.
If we just bring the top carrier part of a travel system seat, will that be enough? Do I need to bring the base, too? It's just a standard, recent, Graco quattro travel system.
Thanks!

bring whatever you feel comfortable with, sometimes I felt it was easier to just hold my baby and stored my carseat, that way I can take the base and not have to strap it on the airplane seat.

If you do not purchase the seat they may not let you strap a car seat into it. Check with the airlines. But the seat need’s to be airline approved and it will say somewhere on the seat. I believe when using just a lap beat it needs to be attacked using the base. That depends on the car seat. My travel system had no way to belt in the seat with out the base with just a lap belt but could be done with a shoulder belt. You can not just place the seat in the base with out anything restraining it properly. Any airline I have flown with have been very picky about child restraints.

Check that the seat is airline approved, there should be a sticker on it if it is. If not, call the airline to check.
I have never seen an infant seat that was airline approved but I only use convertible styles, so haven’t paid much attention either.
If the seat requires the use of the base you probably need both, if not them just the seat would do, if it’s approved.

You can’t use a seat for free just becuase it’s empty.. If you want a seat you have to pay for it. If you’re going to hold your baby, check the car seat with your luggage, but keep in mind that many airlines are charging extra for each checked parcel.

whoa…talk about wealth of misinformation! lol OK – you CAN use an empty seat to insatll your car seat on the plane, even if you didn’t buy your child a seat. but only IF the flight attendant says you can, so you’re at her mercy. Often they will let you though, as airlines actually prefer to have all passengers, babies included, properly restrained. They only even offer lap babies as free as a selling point. They figure more parenst will fly if they can bring their infant for free even if its not safe and doesn’t make for a good flight.
And most car seats are FAA approved for use on airplanes. In fact, the list of seats not FAA approved is a lot easier to state: Britax Regent and booster seats. There. That’s pretty much it. lol Haven’t seen a modern infant seat that wasn’t FAA approved, Graco is. As for whether you have to use the base or not, check your manual. I don’t think you need to, but truth is you may want the base when you get to your destination b/c its easier to install that way. You could always just bring the base and stow it as carryon on the plane. Or gate check it. That way you know its going to be waiting for you when you get off the plane. I would not consider holding my child on the plane as an option. Its just not safe and can make for a very miserable flight for everyone.
